Austin ISD Austin Public School Information Austin conjures up images of the Texas State Capitol, live music, and great barbeque, but did you know that it’s also home to great schools? Amid the beautiful scenery Austin offers, there is a rich diversity to be discovered in the Austin Independent School District (AISD). AISD serves 78,000 students on 107 different campuses and combines the diversity of an urban district with strong, widespread community support. The district made significant improvements on its TAKS scores (the state standardized test) over the past four years making it a leader among urban districts in Texas. Preparing students for college also remains a high priority for AISD, with the average SAT score for the class of 2002 exceeding the state average by more than 50 points and the national average by 29 points; advanced placement participation is more than double that of the state’s rate. Additionally, AISD boasts more National Board
Certified teachers than any other district in the state and contains five
of Newsweek Magazine’s top 600 high schools in the nation. So if the lure
of Austin’s beauty and vitality have got you thinking it would be a great
place to live, remember it’s also a great place to raise kids! |

Austin ISD has facilities, land, and other assets representing a taxpayer investment of almost $1 billion. On September 11, 2004, Austin voters approved a $520 million bond package that will build eight new schools and 92 additional classrooms, renovate existing schools and facilities, and upgrade campus security. With funding from the 1996 School Bond Program, AISD opened 11 new schools and new athletic and student activity complexes. AISD is engaged in a $49.3 million campus repair and renovation project with funding from the 2002 Health & Safety Bond Program. The Austin School
District employs almost 11,000 professional and support personnel, making
it one of the largest employers in the metropolitan Austin area. |

Riding the Bus
Safety Tips 1. Have a safe place to wait for your bus, away from traffic and the street. 2. Stay away from the bus until it comes to a complete stop and the driver signals you to enter. 3. When being dropped off, exit the bus and walk ten giant steps away from the bus. Keep a safe distance between you and the bus. Also, remember that the bus driver can see you best when you are back away from the bus. 4. Use the handrail to enter and exit the bus. 5. Stay away from the bus until the driver gives his/her signal that it's okay to approach. 6. Be aware of the street traffic around you. Drivers are required to follow certain rules of the road concerning buses, however, not all do. Protect yourself and watch out! |
Walking and
Biking to School 1. Mind all traffic signals and/or the crossing guard - never cross the street against a light, even if you don't see any traffic. 2. Walk your bike through intersections. 3. Walk with a buddy. 4. Wear reflective material, it makes you more visible to street traffic. Riding in a Car 1. You might have heard before that most traffic crashes occur close to home, they do. 2. Safety belts are the best form of protection passengers have in the event of a crash. 3. You are four times more likely to be seriously injured or killed if ejected from the vehicle in a crash. Everyone needs to be buckled up properly. That means older kids in seat belts, younger kids in booster seats and little kids in child safety seats. |
